Evelina Fedorenko receives Troland Award from National Academy of Sciences

Cognitive neuroscientist is recognized for her groundbreaking discoveries about the brain’s language system.

Evelina Fedorenko, a cognitive neuroscientist at MIT, has been awarded the 2025 Troland Research Award by the National Academy of Sciences for her pioneering work on the brain's language system. Her research demonstrates that the language network is specialized for language processing, distinct from other cognitive functions like math or music. She also highlights that while language models excel at linguistic rules, they struggle in real-world communication. Fedorenko argues that language is primarily a communication tool, not the medium of thought. The award will be presented to her in April 2025.
