South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported evidence of a second deployment of North Korean troops to Ukraine in early February, replacing hundreds killed in earlier fighting. The troops were stationed in Kursk, a region counter-invaded by Ukraine in August. South Korean news agency Yonhap confirmed the deployment began in the first week of February, though the exact number of troops remains under investigation. A report by the Korea JoongAng Ilbo indicated between 1,000 to 3,000 North Korean troops were sent to the Kursk front via Russian cargo ships and military aircraft between January and February. Ukraine has captured and interviewed North Korean soldiers, claiming around 11,000 are fighting alongside Russia, with 4,000 reportedly killed. North Korea and Russia have not confirmed these figures. Ukraine also alleges North Korea is using "ice burial" to dispose of soldiers' remains. Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un emphasized military preparedness during a visit to a military training academy.
