Fears for historic villages in green belt as Labour scraps rules against 'unrestricted sprawl' and blocks campaign groups from objecting

Fresh planning guidance issued by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has made clear that significant green belt safeguards don't apply to villages.

Labour's planning reforms, led by Angela Rayner, remove green belt protections for villages to build 1.5 million new homes. Changes include excluding villages from "unrestricted sprawl" rules, reclassifying "low quality" green belt land as "grey belt", and restricting input from groups like the Garden History Society. Critics warn this will lead to the destruction of historic villages.
