Former banker (and Irish citizen) Mark Carney to become next Canadian prime minister

The 59-year-old replaces outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January.

Former banker Mark Carney, an Irish citizen, will become Canada's next prime minister, replacing Justin Trudeau after winning the Liberal Party leadership election with 85.9% of the vote. Carney defeated Chrystia Freeland and campaigned on a platform of standing up to US President Donald Trump, who he criticized for his trade war and remarks about Canada becoming the 51st US state. Carney, who previously led the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is renouncing his Irish and UK citizenships to hold only Canadian citizenship.
