‘There is no way that somebody can rape and assault children for all those years without the knowledge of people around’
French surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec, accused of raping and sexually assaulting hundreds of young patients over 25 years (1989-2014), admitted to "despicable" acts during his trial in 2020. Despite a 2005 suspended sentence for child pornography and warnings from a psychiatrist, he continued practicing until 2017. Authorities found diaries detailing his assaults, and the National Council of Physicians is now working to prevent future harm.
