Full list of car tax rates 2025 and how much you'll have to pay from April

New Vehicle Excise Duty rates will be introduced from April 2025 which will affect electric, zero and nil-rate low emission vehicles

New Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates will be introduced from April 2025, affecting electric, zero, and low-emission vehicles. The £0 band for these vehicles under the existing VED system will be removed, and they will now be subject to new tax rates. The amount charged will depend on the vehicle type and registration date. Electric vehicles registered on or after April 1, 2025, will incur a £10 annual charge, while those registered between April 1, 2017, and March 31, 2025, will pay the standard rate. The £10 annual discount for hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) will also be removed. Additionally, electric vehicles registered on or after April 1, 2025, with a list price exceeding £40,000, will incur an additional expensive car supplement for the first five years.
