Poland and joint Sweden-Denmark bid were in runningGermany have won tournament a record eight timesGermany will host the 2029 Women’s European Championship after receiving the vast majority of the votes from Uefa’s executive committee.The German campaign pledged to smash records for ticket sales and was selected ahead of a bid from Poland and a joint submission from Denmark and Sweden. Portugal withdrew from the bidding process in November and the Italian Football Federation withdrew its candidacy in August. Uefa’s executive committee made the decision in the first round of voting, leading to a landslide victory, with 15 of the 17 votes going to Germany’s bid. An auction in New York today is almost certain to make the celebrated artist a record-breaker. But, overshadowing what could be a $60m sale, are questions about works that have allegedly disappearedThis may well be Frida Kahlo’s biggest year yet. There’s the recent opening of a museum in Mexico City celebrating her life and work. There’s the Art Institute in Chicago exhibiting her work for the first time. And then, in Shenzhen, there’s the show that marked her Chinese debut. All this “Fridamania” tucks in between last year’s big screen documentary Frida and next year’s exhibitions in London and the US.What’s more, to cap it all, a Sotheby’s auction in New York today is almost certain to make Kahlo a record-breaker. Her 1940 painting The Dream (The Bed) is forecast to fetch between $40-$60m, which would dwarf the previous record for a female artist, set in 2014 by Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed/White Flower No 1, which sold for $44.4m. The national team reached the quarter-finals for the first time and a total of 623,088 were in attendance at the 31 matches, a tournament record. The hope within Switzerland was for a boost at club level similar to what England experienced three years previously. Those heights have not been reached, but there has been a definite bump.According to Switzerland’s football association, their Women’s Super League has enjoyed a 62% increase in attendances this season, with an average attendance of 787.
