Government accused of treating public 'like idiots' following speaking rights row vote

The opposition has removed pairing arrangements with the government in protest.

Following a controversial vote to change Dáil rules granting speaking time to Regional Independents Group members, the opposition accused the government of treating the public like "idiots" and ended cross-party cooperation by withdrawing pairing arrangements. The opposition claims the vote was undemocratic, lacked proper debate, and broke promises. The government argues the change allows the Dáil to move forward with establishing Oireachtas Joint Committees and that the opposition has focused too much on the speaking rights issue.
