Academy rules state a film’s score ‘must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise’
Hans Zimmer criticized the Oscars rule that disqualified his "Dune: Part Two" score, deeming it "stupid" because it restricted the use of more than 20% of themes from the first "Dune" film. Zimmer and director Denis Villeneuve argued that "Dune: Part Two" is a continuation, not a sequel, and that the score is largely new. Zimmer also mentioned exploring other composing opportunities beyond superhero films and composing the score for the new BBC adaptation of Lord of the Flies.
