Healey, lawmakers call on DPU to reduce energy costs after natural gas spike

Maura Healey and Massachusetts lawmakers have called on the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) to address the surge in energy costs due to colder temperatures, higher natural gas demand, and maintenance needs. Lawmakers sent a letter to the DPU urging a review of approved natural gas rates, while Healey emphasized the financial strain on residents and urged immediate relief. The DPU is reviewing the letters and working with gas companies to revise delivery rates to stabilize prices. Gas companies cited factors such as energy efficiency programs, commodity costs, and infrastructure investments as contributors to the rate increases. Healey highlighted the need to prevent future spikes, and the DPU has committed to exploring solutions, including revisiting delivery charges tied to energy efficiency and rate assistance programs. The DPU also prohibited Eversource from filing another rate case until 2030.
