Heathrow closed all day after electrical substation fire, with some flights diverted to Shannon

Thousands of homes have been left without power and more than 100 people were evacuated.

A fire at an electrical substation caused a power outage and the cancellation of over 1,300 flights at Heathrow Airport on March 21, 2025. The fire is considered non-suspicious, and limited flights resumed in the evening, prioritizing repatriation and relocation of aircraft. The airport CEO apologized for the disruption, defending the response to the "unprecedented" event. The National Grid has reconfigured the network to restore power, but further disruption is expected. Eurostar will be operating more trains to assist stranded passengers.
