Housebuilding boost welcomed but charities urge majority must be for social rent

The investment is aimed at helping to fulfill the Government’s pledge to build 1.5 million new homes over the next five years.

The UK government announced funding for new social and affordable homes, aiming to build at least half of 18,000 homes as social housing. Charities welcomed the boost but urged that the majority be for social rent, citing record homelessness and a need for 90,000 social homes built annually to meet the government's target of 1.5 million homes in five years. The number of households on social housing waiting lists is at a decade high.
