How tax cut promises stack up to Canada’s soaring cost of living

Pledges could fall short in households spending $800 more on food this year

Canadian political parties are proposing tax cuts to address the rising cost of living. The Liberals propose a marginal tax rate cut, saving the average middle-class family up to $825 annually. The Conservatives propose cutting the lowest income tax bracket, saving the average worker $900 per year. The NDP propose tax cuts on essential items, while the Green Party targets wealthy individuals and corporations. One group calls them "a welcome appetizer", but says more is needed. Pierre Poilievre is also promising to cut the goods and services tax (GST)on all new homes under $1.3 million.
