How to check if you have skin cancer: Symptoms and signs to look out for

More than 17,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year

Skin cancer diagnoses are rising, with cases predicted to increase by half by 2040 due in part to increased sunburn from cheap holidays. Melanoma, the deadliest form, often appears as a new or changing mole with asymmetrical shapes and irregular borders. Non-melanoma typically presents as a non-healing lump or discolored patch. Basal cell carcinoma can be a red, pink, pearly, or waxy lump, or a scaly patch, while squamous cell carcinoma often appears as a firm pink lump.
