Iowa's governor signs a bill removing gender identity protections from the state’s civil rights code

Iowa has became the first U.S. state to remove gender identity protections from its civil rights code

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill removing gender identity protections from the state’s civil rights code, making Iowa the first U.S. state to do so. The law, effective July 1, 2023, defines gender based on biological sex at birth, rejecting gender transitions. Opponents, including transgender advocates and some lawmakers, argue the bill exposes transgender individuals to discrimination. Protests occurred, emphasizing "trans rights are human rights." The bill follows years of Republican efforts to restrict transgender students' access to certain spaces and sports. The civil rights law now no longer protects against gender identity discrimination, though it retains protections for race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, and disability. Advocacy groups plan to defend transgender rights, possibly through legal challenges.
