Ireland Funds: The $1,000 a plate dinner that's jinxed more than one Irish Taoiseach in the past

One of the Taoiseach’s final events stateside before he heads home is the Ireland Funds dinner, a glitzy affair with the odd Irish celeb thrown in.

The Ireland Funds dinner, a $1,000-a-plate fundraising event held annually during St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Washington D.C., aims to support peace in Ireland. The glitzy gala is attended by Irish-American business people, politicians, and occasionally celebrities. Past events have led some to believe the dinner is "jinxed" for Irish leaders, citing instances such as Leo Varadkar being called away for an emergency NPHET meeting at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and Micheál Martin testing positive for COVID-19 at the event.
