The IRS plans to lay off approximately 7,000 probationary workers, primarily in compliance departments, starting Thursday. These workers have less than a year of service. Despite this, IRS employees involved in the 2025 tax season were told earlier this month not to accept buyout offers until mid-May, after the taxpayer filing deadline.
