The IRS is reportedly reviewing a request to grant access to a classified system containing sensitive taxpayer data to a member of Elon Musk's 'department of government efficiency' (Doge). The individual is software engineer Gavin Kliger, personally selected by Musk. Kliger, a staff member at the Office of Personnel Management, is set to work as a senior adviser to the acting IRS commissioner, Doug O'Donnell. His role would involve providing engineering assistance and IT modernization consulting, giving him broad access to IRS systems, including tax returns and sensitive financial records. This request is under review, with conditions to maintain confidentiality and secure taxpayer information, and to delete it upon completion of his term. The Doge agency's efforts to access federal agencies have previously faced legal challenges, with lawsuits filed against similar requests. This move comes amid the IRS preparing to lay off workers and modernize its IT systems.
