Jobs warning after Trump tariffs hit UK steel and aluminium exports

The UK Government said Donald Trump’s actions were disappointing but did not retaliate, while Brussels threatened a trade war with Washington.

US tariffs on UK steel and aluminium exports (25%) have prompted job warnings from unions. The UK government expressed disappointment but didn't retaliate, while the EU threatened a trade war with the US, introducing countermeasures on goods such as motorcycles and bourbon. Around 5% of UK steel exports and 6% of aluminium exports go to the US. In 2024, the UK exported 180,000 tonnes of steel to the US, worth £370 million and aluminium exports were valued at £225 million.
