Jordan’s Principle ‘not a suggestion,’ AMC grand chief says in call for full implementation
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is demanding full implementation of Jordan's Principle, criticizing Indigenous Services Canada for mismanagement that has left First Nations children without crucial support. They argue that the program's issues stem from a lack of consultation and encouragement to overspend by the government, despite nearly $9 billion spent since 2016. This comes after Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu initiated changes to ensure the program's sustainability. The family of Jordan River Anderson, for whom the principle is named, is also calling for investigations into the program's effectiveness. Chiefs insist Jordan's Principle is a binding commitment and suggest Hajdu be replaced.
