Kennedy Center Cancels Gay Men's Chorus LGBTQIA+ Pride Performance

The Kennedy Center has canceled an upcoming LGBTQIA+ Pride performance by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW), following President Donald Trump’s assumption of the chairman role at the venue. The GMCW, a 250-member group, expressed disappointment over the cancellation of their planned collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) on the piece “A Peacock Among Pigeons,” which was part of the Kennedy Center’s Pride celebration. The chorus, which has performed for former presidents, stated its commitment to advancing equality and diversity and will now present the performance at their Choral Festival during WorldPride 2025. The cancellation occurred after Trump criticized the Kennedy Center’s previous programming, including drag shows targeting youth, and vowed to bring back “the brightest STARS” to the stage. The GMCW, formed in 1981 after inspiration from the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, has a history of advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights, including a 2021 music video that sparked backlash for its perceived promotion of a pro-LGBTQIA+ agenda.
