Killers could serve shorter jail terms for good behaviour in radical overhaul of sentencing, justice minister signals

Shabana Mahmood warned ‘short sentence reform on its own isn’t going to be enough’ to ease the overcrowding crisis as she opened a new 1,500-cell prison



The UK Justice Secretary is considering a radical overhaul of sentencing, including allowing prisoners serving longer terms for serious crimes (excluding murder) to earn earlier parole through good behavior, to alleviate prison overcrowding. This is part of a government review aimed at preventing the prison system from collapsing. The measures may be implemented through legislation. The government has opened a new state-of-the-art Category C prison and has plans for more.
