The asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a 1 in 48 chance of impacting Earth in 2032, was photographed by the Gemini South telescope in Chile. The asteroid, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters in size, was observed at a distance of approximately 60 million kilometers from Earth. Imaging challenges included the Moon being 70% illuminated, increasing background light. The asteroid, first discovered in December 2024, is being monitored by various telescopes, including the James Webb Space Telescope, to better understand its potential impact. It will remain visible from Earth until early April 2025 and is expected to reappear in June 2028.
