Le Sénat s’attaque au vote par correspondance des détenus pour les municipales et les législatives
The French Senate has voted to remove the option for incarcerated individuals to vote by mail in municipal and legislative elections, citing concerns about potential democratic destabilization in towns with large prison populations. This change, supported by the government, comes ahead of the 2026 municipal elections. While mail-in voting is eliminated for these elections, it remains for presidential, European, and referendum votes. The Senate also expanded proxy voting options for prisoners, allowing registration in their children's municipalities of residence. The initiative has drawn criticism from some senators who describe it as an attack on the right to vote for prisoners.
