Leather industry: Expert calls for action to unlock sector’s potential

Meck Emmanuel, Founder of Nyashii Leather, has emphasized the need for concerted efforts to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s leather industry. With a significant livestock population, the sector could generate over $1 billion annually in foreign exchange, create skilled jobs, and promote cultural heritage. Currently, over 85% of leather used in Nigeria is imported, impacting pricing and availability. To unlock this potential, Emmanuel advocates for modernization, skill development, infrastructure improvement, market access, branding, and a comprehensive National Leather Policy. He also highlights the importance of government support through financial incentives, credit access, and investment in research and development. The African luxury leather market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10-12%, with Nigeria potentially capturing a significant share.
