Leaving Cert students to face oral exams in English under sweeping changes

Draft plan would see candidates quizzed on plays or books at end of fifth year

Sweeping changes to the Leaving Cert English exam will include oral tests for students at the end of fifth year, assessing their understanding of studied texts through two-way communication and critical thinking. The oral exam, worth 20%, and creative writing tasks will be common level assessments, while written exams will remain at higher and lower levels. A new syllabus is expected by 2027, following a public consultation. Concerns have been raised regarding AI misuse by students, with teachers seeking legal indemnity.
