Karen Read’s motions hearing was abruptly halted when Judge Beverly Cannone expressed “grave concern” after receiving new information from prosecutors. The hearing focused on motions to bar defense witnesses, including crash reconstructionists hired by federal authorities, and to exclude certain evidence. Read’s defense sought a forensically sound copy of surveillance footage, unredacted documents from a related investigation, and access to vehicles for independent analysis. Prosecutors requested recordings from Read’s recent media interviews. Read also filed a habeas corpus claim in federal court to dismiss two charges, arguing double jeopardy, though the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court previously rejected a similar bid. Her defense contends she was framed in a law enforcement cover-up. Read’s first trial ended in a hung jury, and the retrial is set to proceed.
