M23 rebels captured the strategic mining hub of Walikale in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, defying ceasefire calls. Walikale is the farthest west M23 has reached since January, cutting off a key road and army positions. Fighting occurred near Nyabangi and outside the town. M23, backed by Rwanda, aims to protect Congolese Tutsi interests. The capture occurred after failed direct talks between the DRC and M23, and a meeting between the DRC and Rwandan presidents where they called for a ceasefire.
