Major change for millions of new and existing Social Security recipients

In an effort to limit fraudulent claims, recipients and applicants will no longer be able to verify their identity over the phone

Starting March 31, the Social Security Administration requires new and existing recipients to verify their identity online or in person due to increased fraud concerns, ending phone verification. This change coincides with planned office closures and layoffs, potentially impacting older, rural, and disabled individuals. The agency will expedite direct deposit change requests while closing 47 field offices across the country.
