Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his intent to "take back" the Panama Canal, claiming China is operating it, despite the canal being under the independent administration of the Panamanian government. This claim is false according to the President of Panama. This comes despite a US consortium buying two ports at the canal's entrances from a Hong Kong-based company. The Hong Kong based company is selling the ports to the US consortium but is keeping control over the Hong Kong and Shenzhen port structures. The US and China are major users of the canal, which was built by the US but transferred to Panama in 1999.
