Man goes on trial accused of raping Spanish tourist in Dublin city centre

A 33-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, accused of raping a Spanish tourist in Dublin city centre on January 1, 2019. The defendant has pleaded not guilty. The complainant, a tourist celebrating New Year’s Eve, became separated from her friend and encountered the defendant, who offered assistance. The prosecution alleges that the defendant then subjected her to non-consensual acts, including kissing and touching, leading to the alleged rape. CCTV footage of the incident and the complainant’s movements that night will be presented as evidence. The complainant later encountered another man, but no charges have been brought against him. The trial, expected to last about a week and a half, continues before Ms Justice Caroline Biggs and the jury.
