Mark Carney will maintain oil and gas emissions cap, environment minister says
Environment Minister Terry Duguid stated that a Mark Carney government would maintain the oil and gas emissions cap, a policy initiated by the Trudeau Liberals with draft regulations requiring a one-third emissions cut by producers within eight years through a cap-and-trade system. Industry leaders and Conservative politicians, including Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, criticize the cap as too stringent and potentially leading to production cuts, deterring investment and undermining employment. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and energy executives have called for the cap to be scrapped, while the government maintains it aims to force cleaner production, with emissions from the sector accounting for 31% of Canada's total in 2022. The regulations would compel upstream oil and gas operations to reduce emissions to 35 per cent below where they were in 2019 by some point between 2030 and 2032. Emissions from the sector fell four per cent between 2019 and 2022.
