Mary, Queen of Scots at London Coliseum review: a long overdue standing ovation

Thea Musgrave’s powerful and imaginatively scored opera finally gets its London staging

Mary, Queen of Scots, an opera by Thea Musgrave, received its London premiere at the London Coliseum, marking a significant event for the English National Opera (ENO). The production, based on Amalia Elguera’s play *Moray*, focuses on Mary’s struggles against a “toxic trio” of male figures: her half-brother James Stewart, Lord Darnley, and the Earl of Bothwell. The three-act opera depicts Mary’s resilience as a ruler and her personal turmoil, culminating in poignant music and a long-overdue standing ovation for the 96-year-old composer.
