A recent SmartAsset study indicates Massachusetts is now the most expensive state to be middle class, requiring a household income between $66,565 and $199,716 in 2023, surpassing New Jersey. This contrasts sharply with Mississippi, the least expensive state, where the range is $36,132 to $108,406. Boston is the 13th most expensive city, with a range of $64,614 to $193,862, while Detroit is the most affordable city at $25,384 to $76,160. The study uses a modified Pew Research definition, considering income between two-thirds and double the median U.S. income.
