Mel Brooks thought there was ‘no reason’ to make The Producers into a musical

The original Broadway production won 12 Tony Awards.

Mel Brooks, creator of the 1967 film *The Producers*, initially opposed turning it into a musical, stating there was "no reason" for it. Despite his reservations, the musical was developed, featuring Nathan Lane and Lee Evans, and became a success, winning awards and later being adapted into a film in 2005.
