Mexican health authorities issue alert following rise in whooping cough cases

Mexican health authorities have issued an alert due to a significant increase in whooping cough cases, rising from 153 in 2023 to 443 in 2025, a 190% increase. In the first seven weeks of 2025, 120 confirmed and 460 suspected cases were reported across 21 states. The most affected states include Nuevo León, Mexico City, and Aguascalientes. Whooping cough, caused by Bordetella pertussis bacteria, can lead to severe respiratory issues, particularly in infants under six months. Prevention primarily involves vaccination, with the acellular pentavalent vaccine recommended. Additional preventive measures include handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and covering coughs and sneezes.
