Taoiseach Micheál Martin criticized Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill's boycott of St. Patrick's Day events in Washington D.C. as a "big mistake" and "opportunistic," arguing it was not in the best interests of Northern Ireland, especially given past efforts to engage Sinn Féin in the peace process. O'Neill boycotted the events in protest of US President Donald Trump's policies. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly and other parties also boycotted White House events.
