In March 2025, five Senegalese men, presumed captains of a pirogue carrying 80 migrants from Nouakchott, faced charges in the Canary Islands for homicide and injury due to negligence. Accused of causing the deaths of migrants from starvation and dehydration and ordering bodies to be thrown overboard after their boat was rescued after 20 days adrift, the men face over 20 years in prison and fines of 98.4 million CFA francs each.
