Plateau State Governor Mutfwang suspended all mining activities in February 2025 (Executive Order 001) to restore order and protect the environment, addressing environmental degradation and links to insecurity and criminal activity. This decision has been met with mixed reactions. Some residents support the move, citing the need to protect youth and develop the state responsibly. Others, particularly those in the mining community, fear increased criminal activity and disruption to their livelihoods, suggesting alternative solutions like regulating existing unions and preventing underage miners instead of a complete ban.
