New blow to Walthamstow's 'beer mile' as craft brewery announces closure after council rent battle

More businesses at risk as cash-strapped local authority calls in debts

Hackney Brewery & High Hill Tap, a craft brewery on Walthamstow's "beer mile," is closing at the end of March due to a rent battle with Waltham Forest Council over arrears. The council's "hardline approach" to recovering commercial debts, as it searches for £14.3m of savings despite hiking council tax bills by 4.99 per cent has led to the closure, with concerns that more businesses could follow. This closure follows recent shutdowns of Wild Card brewery and Beerblefish, also on the "beer mile."
