New DWP plans to help thousands of sick and disabled people on benefits into work

DWP will provide additional support for around 65,000 sick and disabled people to help ‘unlock the benefits of work’.

The UK's Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has unveiled plans to assist approximately 65,000 sick and disabled individuals on benefits in entering the workforce. This initiative involves redeploying 1,000 Work Coaches to offer intensive support, including CV preparation, interview coaching, and access to employment programs. The DWP aims to enhance the sustainability of the welfare system and stimulate economic growth. Recent surveys indicate that many disabled individuals feel the current system lacks adequate support, with 44% distrusting the DWP's ability to help them reach their career potential. These reforms are part of the broader "Plan for Change," which includes measures like a Youth Guarantee and empowering local leaders to reduce economic inactivity. Additionally, Sir Charlie Mayfield is leading a review to improve support for disabled individuals in maintaining employment. The DWP's efforts aim to address the flaws in the current benefits system, which is seen as failing to adequately support those who could work.
