New grade of professor set to be introduced at technological universities

Eleven top academics in traditional universities given special sanction for higher salaries of up to €235,000

The Irish government is in talks with colleges and unions to introduce a new professorship grade at the country's five technological universities (TUs), aiming to align them with traditional universities and boost research and innovation. This follows an OECD review that highlighted the TUs' limited grading structure as a barrier to their potential. Discussions involve the number of professorships, salary scales (potentially contentious), and teaching hours. The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) opposes regional variations in pay. This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to enhance research, innovation, and attract international students, with €84 million invested in TU research capacity.
