New TV licence fee of £174.50 could be replaced by ‘sliding scale’ payment rates for households

The annual TV licence fee will increase on April 1.

The UK TV licence fee, currently £174.50 annually and set to increase with inflation until 2027, is being reconsidered. Alternatives, including a "sliding scale" payment system based on household income, are being explored. While general taxation is ruled out, the government is open to other funding models and has extended the Simple Payment Plan for those struggling to pay. A petition to end the licence fee for pensioners is active until May 2025.
