Next generation of nuclear deterrent submarines ‘a commitment to defence’

The Prime Minister attended a keel-laying ceremony in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, for the first of the Dreadnought class of submarines.

The UK is building a new fleet of four Dreadnought-class nuclear deterrent submarines, with the first keel laid in Barrow-in-Furness. This project is viewed as a long-term commitment to national defense, expected to enter service in the early 2030s, and will increase defence spending to 2.5% of the UK’s economic output by 2027. The submarine workforce at Barrow has significantly increased, and the town has been designated the Royal Port of Barrow.
