NHS 111 operator failed to escalate case of boy, 17, as he died from sepsis, but handler believed there was no

Cyrus Perry's mother Hayley called the service after the teenager fell ill at his home in Sturminster Marshall, Dorset.

An inquest heard that an NHS 111 call handler failed to escalate the case of a 17-year-old boy who died from sepsis, though the handler believed there was no one to escalate it to. The boy died of sepsis and group A strep between 3am and 6.30am on June 8, 2023. The mother expressed concerns about NHS 111, feeling her son's death was preventable and that she was let down by the service. Cases judged less urgent were receiving call-backs 40 minutes sooner on average than those in the more serious category, on the night the boy died.
