Nigeria climbs Africa’s solar ranks, now 5th largest installer

Nigeria is now Africa's 5th largest solar installer with 73 MW capacity in 2024, driven by the removal of petrol subsidies and rising electricity tariffs. Off-grid solar solutions are growing, accounting for 55% of new electricity connections in Sub-Saharan Africa between 2020-2022. Nigeria's cumulative installed solar capacity reached 385.7 MW in 2024. Utility-scale solar development is limited by weak grid infrastructure despite ambitious government targets. The commercial and industrial solar segment is expanding, and new solar capacity is projected to increase.
