Number of people in hospital with norovirus hits new winter high

The number of norovirus cases in English hospitals has reached a new winter high, with weekly data showing an average of 1,160 beds occupied daily by patients with symptoms, up 22% from the previous week. This level is higher than the same period in the past two years. Norovirus, a stomach bug causing vomiting and diarrhea, typically resolves within two days but can lead to severe illness in vulnerable groups. Hospitals face added pressure due to isolation and ward cleaning needs. Additionally, nearly one in seven beds are occupied by patients medically fit for discharge, contributing to bed shortages. Officials urge handwashing with soap and water to prevent spread, as alcohol gels are ineffective. Ambulance handover delays and flu levels further strain services, though flu cases are slightly lower than last winter.
