Number of taxpayers dragged into paying higher rate soars 15%, figures show

There were 5.1 million higher-rate taxpayers in 2022-23, according to the latest figures supplied by HMRC.



In 2022-23, the number of higher-rate taxpayers in the UK increased by 15% to 5.1 million due to frozen income tax thresholds, with higher and additional rate taxpayers contributing 68.7% of total income tax revenue. The number of additional-rate taxpayers also rose by 9.5% to 600,000, while 1.5 million more people paid income tax due to a freeze in the personal allowance threshold.
