Officer tells inquiry he believes police were the intended target of Omagh bomb

Norman Haslett, a former Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) constable and current Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) superintendent, testified at the Omagh Bombing Inquiry that he believes the Real IRA intended to target police with the 1998 Omagh bomb. The explosion killed 29 civilians, including a pregnant woman. Haslett described the chaos and aftermath, including his role in the operation and the discovery of a 12-year-old Spanish victim. He emphasized that while 29 civilians died, he believes the primary target was the police. He also stated that the bombers bear full responsibility for the atrocity.
