Oil & gas investments won’t make Africa net contributor to global emissions –Veheijen

On March 13, 2025, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to hydrocarbon investments for energy poverty alleviation, asserting Africa's minimal contribution to global emissions. Special Advisor Olu Verheijen, speaking at CERAWeek, emphasized Africa's low emission share compared to China and the US. Nigeria advocates for a just energy transition, utilizing natural gas as a transition fuel. Verheijen stressed the need for regional integration, better data collection, and a balanced approach allowing developing nations to use natural resources sustainably. She stated that even with economic growth, Africa won't be a major global emissions contributor, with developed nations needing to lead in emission reductions.
